Tama Toa

Levi won a Taiaha for being the top Tama Toa student. Tama Toa participants learn to take on challenges with confidence.

Levi is a year 6 student who took maths in room 21 several years ago. He graduates this year.

Graduation for Year 6 students

Students who graduated tonight are moving on to intermediates throughout Manurewa and Papakura. The graduates were impeccably dressed and all had a great time. Mrs Brown was given a heart felt farewell.  It was an exciting evening.

Kaleb told this story to Alistair, who typed it.

WOW! That was the best thing I have ever done in school time! At the end I got a certificate from High Wire and gifts from them. High Wire is by Papakura. Every Thursday is when we go to High Wire. I’d like to tell you who came. Hyson, Corrina, Serena, Arnov, Dtroyt, Dhruv, Grace, Jarayius, Alyssa and I (Kaleb).          

  On the first day we went in a taxi van to High Wire. We told our names to Carly and Rachael. We first went into a movie theatre. We told them our favourite foods in the world. Then we went outside and we had to cross the road so that we can get to the rugby fields! We learnt how to tie knots, we did activities with Carly and Rachael and we enjoyed it. We did the “Two legged race”. We did an activity that was in an imaginary cave. We got a plank, a car wheel, a hula hoop and a piece of straight cardboard. The grass is supposed to be lava! If anybody falls off any pieces of equipment, they would have to carry the equipment back to the start until we got it right with teamwork! We went into a classroom where Carly and Rachael and we got little notebooks from them. We did drawings and did some writing in it too! We looked around the place. We did “Tug-of-war” with a rope. We took pictures of all of us sitting on the deck.

  On the second day we did fitness!!!! We got some rope and a normal and empty bin that we pretended was a bomb. We tied the rope around the bin and we had to pull it out of the cone so the bomb doesn’t explode! If the bin falls over then the bomb will explode. The equipment was a long stick the size of Ms Turner’s 1 metre ruler, cones and the bomb (bin). We wrote some more in our notebook and drew in our notebooks too!

 I got a special pen from Mr Thew because Mrs Griffin came with us to High Wire. She only saw standing out was Dhruv, Dtroyt, Hyson and me. We also got a special pen that says “Effort brings reward Manurewa Central School” on it.

   On the third day we did BMX riding. We had to cross the road again. We got on the BMX bikes and went on the grass to get to the BMX track. There were heaps of bumps and Alyssa and Grace got hurt! Grace hadn’t ridden a bike in a looooooooooong time!!!! We went down a big ramp. It was fun. There were big hills and little hills. At the end we had a race on the grass with the BMX bikes. Mr Grover took pictures of us riding the BMX bikes. I even have one on my certificate! 

Room 17 - Experts

The children from room 17 came to teach room 21 how to do the actions to Te hei mauri ora. We all had a lot of fun. It was Ka pai.

In small groups, the children brainstorm to find exciting vocabulary to use in their descriptive tiger stories. They are using a Thesaurus to find 

synonyms or words with a similar meaning. eg. instead of using 'big' they could use: large, huge or enormous.

The children in Room 21 are a very diverse group.  Our calendar art this year is made up of a combination of symbols representing the cultures and ethnicities from our class.

Rico's Maltese Cashew

 I have a puppy called Cashew.  We got him from the pet shop.  Dad thought Cashew was a robot dog but he was a real dog.  He is a toy poodle cross with a Maltese.  After we eat we let him out of his cage and he tries to bite us. When I talk to him he licks me. I like it when he licks me. Cashew sleeps in the hallway.  This morning he pooed on his toilet mat.  I pick his toilet mat up and put it in the rubbish bin then I wash my hands.  After he has his injection I can take him to school.  I am happy we got a puppy.  I love him.

Fatu and Click by Taparia Engu year 4

WOW!!! I had such an amazing time at Vodafone event centre! We watched a play called “Fatu and click". The people who acted it out were from Tangaroa college and MAN... They were amazingly awesome! If you would like to know more then READ ON!!!

The lights turned off and all of a sudden we saw 2 lovely ladies come out of the dark. They were the sea! "Hello boys and girls, we are here to tell you the tale of Fatu and Click," said the wave. Suddenly the background changed from sea to land. Now on an island there lived a family with lots of brothers and only one daughter. Their lives were about to change forever on this day.

"Mum! Mum! Something smells good is it for me?" asked the daughter. The mum looked at her and said "who's birthday is it Fatu?" asked mum. Fatu knew it was her younger brother, Ietie’s birthday. "Oh mum! Grr" grumbled Fatu.

Then dad popped up." Ah my son Ietie it is your birthday! I remember when you were born the sky grew bright with stars!" Fatu heard and went over asking "what about me, dad what did you see?" Dad told her that he saw an octopus but an octopus is smart.☺️

"Happy birthday Ietie!" shouted the brothers and sister Fatu. They celebrated till suddenly HAHAHAHAHA!!! An evil laugh was coming from the dark. Out of nowhere 2 dark figures stalked out of darkness laughing and cackling with dark evil intent. "We are the ‘The Witches!’ And we have come for our slave!"

“You’re what?" Shouted dad confused.

"Oh come on you can't be this stupid!!!" shouted the witches.

What did you do, that they ask this? Well when mum and dad got married dad accidentally made a deal that one of his sons would become a slave of the witches. They tricked Ietie into drinking a hideous poison that turned Ietie to rock! Gasp! Then they left the family heartbroken.

Quite a while later they heard more voices, "Who runs the world? AUNTIES!!" The aunties came in the house (they were and still are showoffs) and gave the boys a massive telling off!  (I wish I could give the boys a massive telling off).

Ietie was stuck in a rock and he couldn't talk or move till a crab came by the name Click. He climbed onto Ietie and pinched him so hard his voice box snapped back on! Ietie was horrified to see that his little crab Click was slowly crawling away while Ietie was still stuck as stone. The brothers came back home doing the same things they always did which was of course horseplay then all of a sudden they heard Ietie speak.  “Brothers you must be good to get rewards if you don't you will be stuck with everybody disliking you" Ietie wisely said. At first they thought they were crazy but then they realised that it was Ietie speaking! They listened and made some changes and because of that everybody liked them.

Kina the older brother was irritated because while the whole family were listening to Ietie he lost a spear throwing competition so he stomped to the house in a terrible rage then when he got there he pushed Ietie off the side of the house into the deep dark depths of the blue sea.

The family were angrier than an elephant stomping on a man! They threw lots of complaints at Kina and he knew that he had made them furious. Suddenly out of the dark stalked the Witches in a rage! "You think you can outsmart us with your Crab Click!?" shouted the witches. "And we want something to drink!" They demanded. (I forgot to tell you at the beginning, Kina hid the hideous poison in the sand that turned Ietie into stone. Watch this next part and see what happens.) Kina rushed out of the house unseen, grabbed the poison and rushed back into the house to trick the witches into drinking the poison. And guess what? They drank it! And in an instant they disappeared. Kina had killed the witches! They were happy so Kina grabbed a spear and threw it and it kept on going. They were happy and smiled.
